Children’s Hospital Zurich by Herzog & de Meuron

Introduction

The aim of my project is to design a scoliosis rehabilitation centre that would combine both treatment and recreational facilities in a warm and supportive environment. My goal is to achieve this objective with the help of a specifically tailored architectural design that would contribute to the healing process. I want to create a rehabilitation centre that would help those afflicted with scoliosis and make their recovery journey through scoliosis easier and less painful – physically and emotionally. As scoliosis usually develops during adolescent years, children are prone to the negative psychological effects of the disorder thus health centres should develop treatments improving both physical and mental well-being of the patients. Furthermore, this centre will also be used to recover after surgery, meaning it would have residential and educational aspects. Instead of being in a standard clinical, cold hospital environment, patients will be surrounded by fellows that are dealing with the same issues and will make it a friendlier space for healing the body and the mind.

I have already gathered general data that helps me to narrow down my subject to a specific age group (11-16) and issues that are encountered in dealing with scoliosis in this vulnerable age group. This research will be looking into possible treatments and any additional ones that could be implemented, such as osteopathy and other holistic treatment methods. In addition, I will be exploring and gathering research on how architecture can be adapted to aid healing, which will lead to suggestions on how could hospital design be improved in that regard.

For my final year dissertation project I will be doing research about scoliosis treatment and how it can be improved by architecture design. I have chosen this subject area as I have personal knowledge and experience with scoliosis. I was diagnosed with scoliosis at age 13 and my spine curvature was controlled not to progress by a back brace that I had to wear for 22 h every day for 18 months. Knowing the struggles that I went through with scoliosis as a teen, I can strongly relate to this subject area.
